At the start of the walk, leader Carl George points out the placement of the leaves on a garlic mustard plant, growing by the path where it enters the Preserve. The angle each leaf makes with the following leaf is 137.xxx degrees, which is optimal for the fair distribution of sunlight among the leaves. Carl explained how the angle is precisely defined by the "Golden Mean", as described by mathematicians and architects going back to Pythagoras.
