At the start of the walk, leader Carl George points
out the placement of the leaves on a garlic mustard plant, growing by
the path where it enters the Preserve. The angle each leaf makes with
the following leaf is 137.xxx degrees, which is optimal for the fair
distribution of sunlight among the leaves. Carl explained how the angle
is precisely defined by the "Golden Mean", as described by
mathematicians and architects going back to Pythagoras.
