Carl showed the walkers how to identify white pine
by the 5 needles in each cluster. He explained that each horizontal
layer of branches represents a year's growth. Carl counted about 35
years for the age of this little tree. It is in partial shade, which
is optimal for growing straight trees -- the kind the British Navy wanted
for masts. Carl mentioned that the Royal Navy would mark trees in the
Colonies, reserving them for the king.
