Carl showed the walkers how to identify white pine by the 5 needles in each cluster. He explained that each horizontal layer of branches represents a year's growth. Carl counted about 35 years for the age of this little tree. It is in partial shade, which is optimal for growing straight trees -- the kind the British Navy wanted for masts. Carl mentioned that the Royal Navy would mark trees in the Colonies, reserving them for the king.
