The Art Museum of the city of Querétaro is located in the ex-convent of St. Augustine. The church and the cloisters of the convent were built between 1723 and 1748. The convent is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful baroque structures in Latin America. The church and convent were taken from the Agustinian order in 1859 by the Reform laws that stripped so much of the Catholic wealth from the Church. The convent remains state property, although the church was returned to the Augustinians in 1880. The convent was used for various purposes until 1988 when it was declared a National Treasure and was refurbished as the Museum of Art. It contains many treasures of colonial Mexican art. Contemporary shows are on display from time to time in large and beautiful galleries. Photography is allowed in the cloisters and courtyard, but not in the galleries.
