On the third Sunday of Lent, the town of Jocotenango turns out unanimously for the Procession of the Blessed Jesus Nazareno and Virgen of Dolores. The event is preceded, on the third Friday of Lent, by a vigil in the church. This year the vigil was accomplished with an amazing alfombra and huerta in front of a tableau depicting the "Destruction of Sodom and Gomorra". On Sunday, people were working on the alfombras as early as 2am. The procession started out at 12:30pm, taking a large loop through Jocotenango before setting out on the road to Antigua. There it traversed the major streets and the main square, passing the major churches. It returned to Jocotenango after midnight. The first photo here shows the vigil in the church Friday night. The rest of the photos are from Sunday morning and early afternoon. The transformation of the interior of the church - from the tableau and huerta to the preparation of the floats -- is dramatically visible in the photos.
