We arrived at the family home in Chamácuaro late afternoon on Tuesday. We met Cuquita, Alejandra’s mother. Cuquita is the vigorous and charming matriarch of the spirited and energetic Rosas family. A steady stream of family and friends came by that evening and at many other times over the next two days. The house is beautiful and is filled with lovely and typical art objects and photographs. We were fascinated by the impressive pre-columbian ceramics. The amazing spiral staircase is the architectural centerpiece of the house, built in 1994, replacing a much earlier traditional home. After sitting in the garden and munching on fresh roasted peanuts, the whole gathering took a stroll around town, going by the church and the plaza. The next morning we met Marisol, Alejandra’s oldest sister, who joined us for breakfast, featuring corundas with cream and salsa, along with orange juice made from the oranges grown in the huerta (orchard) behind the house. Also pictured are two of Alejandra’s brothers, Juan Gerardo, with his wife Gris, and Enrique. We enjoyed meeting Manuel’s cousin, Gerardo and his wife and daughter; Gerardo is considered an adopted son by Cuquita. We left for Salvatierra at around 10am.
