Gulf of Ancud, from Quemchi to Dalcahue

From Ancud we drove south and east to the coast of the Golfo de Ancud. This inland sea represents the southern continuation of the central valley of Chile. The Andean cordillera continues on the mainland, and the coastal range gradually subsides in the Grand Island of Chiloe, and the many smaller islands of the Chiloe archipelago (35 of them inhabited). We arrived in Quemchi, on the Gulf of Ancud. We ate salmon (huge portions) in a local restaurant overlooking the harbor. We walked across the 560m footbridge to the botanical garden island of Aucar, nearby Quemchi. There we saw dozens of black-necked swans, an endangered species, as well as some hummingirds and other interesting creatures. Next we visited the wonderful church of San Antonio de Colo, situated on a pleasant little farm close to the Gulf. In Quicavi, we saw a big truck being loaded with seaweed, an important local crop. We arrived for the night in Dalcahue.
