We followed the southern and eastern shore of Lago Llanquihue around to Ensenada, enjoying views of Volcán Osorno across the lake to the north. At Ensenada, we drove up the valley of the Petrohué River to the Saltos de Petrohué (Petrohué Falls) in the Vicente Perez Rosales National Park. Despite the late summer season, the falls were still roaring, though certainly not like in springtime. Views of Volcán Osorno behind the falls are favorite postcard shots. We enjoyed a peaceful walk on the other trails around the falls, through the rainforest to some great fishing spots. On up the valley we came to the Lago Todos Los Santos, one of the most famous and pristine lakes in the region. Here is where the Jesuits maintained a route by water and mountain pass from Castro into Argentine Patagonia, where they built a mission at San Carlos de Bariloche. Bariloche is now a famous resort; the name comes from the Mapuche term for “people on the other side of the mountains”. Back in Ensenada we had a lovely meal at Los Tranqueros, with great views of Volcán Osorno, then spent the night at the completely delightful Hospedaje La Arena on the shore of Lago Llanquihue.
