We arrived in Entre Lagos, on the shore of Lake Puyehue, in late afternoon. After settling into a B&B, we walked along the lakeshore, busy with beach activity. Next morning we set out through the National Park intending to drive across the pass into Argentina to San Carlos de Bariloche. First we stopped to take a lovely walk in the park to the Saltos del Indio (Indian Falls). At the Chilean checkpoint, we were turned back by the authorities because we didn’t have the car rental agency’s authorization form to take the rental car across the border. Of course we had no idea such a thing was required; later the people at Budget Rent-a-car told us it would have cost $90 – so we wouldn’t have chosen to get it anyway. Making the best of our position, we went back and took more hikes in the National Park. Finally we drove up a long dirt road to the Antillanca ski area, where we had a good meal and paid $5 to drive the remaining 5km to the top of the mountain. Windy, stark beauty: a long-defunct crater (Raihuén) and spectacular views of Volcánes Osorno, Puntiaguda, and Casablanca, along with Mt. Tronador.
