Pueblito
We have visited El Pueblito – the town and the archeological site – twice since we've been in Querétaro. The town is located some 6 miles from downtown Querétaro, but the bus ride takes 45 minutes. No complaint: for 35 cents US, it is a bargain. The pyramid is on the outskirts of the town of Pueblito. It dates from sometime before 1000CE. It was a mess as recently as 15 years ago. The Mexican authorities (INAH) restored it (partially) starting in 1995. There is a nice, modest visitor center with some information, and with a free guide (tip is very much appreciated). While there we obtained free tickets for the Noche de Estrellas (English). We returned on a Friday night a week later to attend the “Night of Stars” event. This unforgettable adventure included over 7,000 local residents attending a combination of a performance (groups of about 100 were led from one performer to the next) with an opportunity to view the heavens (especially Venus and the moon) through telescopes loaned and operated by amateur astronomers. The performers were fabulous, with amazing costumes and some inventive dances. They told stories of earlier views of the heavens. Our favorite was an actor impersonating Galileo, who described himself as a “freak”. As the “Night of the Stars” took place at night (duh) there are no photos.
