Cerro Campanas
A beautiful and historic park in Querétaro is located on a hill to the west of the historic center, called “Cerro Campanas” (Hill of the Bells). Because of its historic importance, this is actually a National Park, small though it is. Atop the hill stands a huge statue of Benito Juarez. That is the site of the execution in 1867 of Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg, the hated monarch who briefly ruled Mexico on behalf of Napoleon III. Years later, in 1900, the Austrian government received permission from Mexico and built a chapel nearby on the hill in Maximilian's honor. The park occupies half of the Cerro; the other half is the primary campus of the Universidad Autonoma de Querétaro.
