Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, Corregidora
Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez is the most honored of the heroines of the Mexican Independence victory. Her husband was appointed Corregidora (a key government post) in the Viceroy's Spanish administration of the province of Querétaro. Nevertheless he was heavily influenced by his wife, Josefa, who ended up helping the liberal independence forces. Her most famous action was passing a note secretly (through a keyhole) to the rebels warning them (successfully) of an impending attack by the royalist forces. Her home, “Casa de la Corregidora” is located on the Plaza de Armas, and is one of the most beautiful colonial structures in the city. It is now the home of the state government.
