We were invited by our friends Manuel and Alejandra to visit their home town and the surrounding area with them. They both grew up in the small farming town of Chamácuaro in southern Guanajuato state, near the northern part of Michoacán state. On Tuesday we took an early bus from Querétaro and met them in Acámbaro. There we visited with two of Alejandra’s brothers and got a tour of their hothouse farm. Then we drove by the beautiful Lake Cuitzéo to the Pueblo Magico of Cuitzéo, just across the border in Michoacán. We started in the central plaza in front of the Centro Cultural del ex-Convento de Santa Maria Magdalena de Cuitzéo, founded by Augustinian friars in 1550. We toured the Convento without charge since it was not entirely open. We also visited the Templo de Santa Maria Magdalena, part of the ex-Convento. We walked around the enormous plaza and visited the Guadalupe church (Santuario de la Virgen de Guadalupe). We noticed the characteristic Michoacan style of architecture and signage (that we first observed 13 years ago in Patzcuaro) that makes even a pawn shop (Empeños) look like an ancient intriguing mystery. We could not find a place to eat in town (even with Manuel asking several people). The market seemed to be closing up. So we headed for Yuriria.
