On Thursday we enjoyed a hearty breakfast of sopes made by Cuquita and Alejandra, and more laughter over family stories. By 10am we were in Acámbaro with Manuel, Alejandra, and Cuquita. Manuel attended secondary school in Acámbaro, the oldest town in the state of Guanajuato, founded in 1526. We visited the lovely San Francisco Templo and convent, including the Templo del Hospital. Nearby is the fountain ‘Fuente Taurina’ with carvings commemorating the first introduction, in Acámbaro, of bullfighting in New Spain. We stopped in the town hall, with impressive murals inside, including a depiction of Miguel Hidalgo and Josefa Ortiz de Dominquez and other insurgents planning the independence struggle. Hidalgo was named “General of the Americas” in Acámbaro as he led a massive demonstration there a month after the “Grito de Dolores” that started the war for independence from Spain. Manuel and Alejandra were married in the Templo de Guadalupe. Facing this church is one of the most beautiful plazas in Mexico. We all sat in a café there and had ice cream and cappuccino. We went by a bakery owned by members of the Rosas family where we bought some “Pan de Acámbaro”. We walked across the 1750 stone bridge over the Rio Lerma and then got on a bus headed back to Querétaro.
