We were invited by our good friends Agustín and Lupita to go with them to visit Carlos and his family in Morelia. Carlos is Agustín’s son; Carlos and his wife Guille have two lovely daughters, Carlis and Sara. Agustín drove us to Morelia Saturday morning, arriving at Carlos’s house about 11am. We were welcomed enthusiastically by the whole family, and then Guille treated us to a hearty comida. We drove downtown to enjoy the sites of the beautiful city. We started in the Museo de Artesania in the ex-convento San Francisco. It was obvious why Michoacan is justly famous for the quality of its artesania.

We visited the “Parroquia Metropolitano” church, better known as the church of “Las Monjas” (The Nuns).

We appreciated the impressive architecture of government buildings, the “La Cruz” church, and the Cathedral.

And we had an intensive guided tour of the Museo del Dulce (Sweet Museum, in the building of the company De La Calle Real Dulces Morelianos), including a demonstration of making “ate de membrillo”, a traditional delicacy that we enjoyed tasting as soon as it was cool enough.

After watching a performance of the “Dance of the oldsters” (Baile de los viejitos) in the Plaza de Armas,

we ate fresh fruit gazpacho and then watched the fireworks and lighting of the cathedral, a magnificent ceremony featured on Saturday nights in Morelia. It was truly a lovely day!
