On Sunday morning Guille provided a hearty and healthy breakfast, and we had lots of good stories around the table. Then Agustin and Lupita drove us out in the countryside toward Lake Patzcuaro to visit some special places. We stopped first in the town of Capula, famous for its artistic pottery. Lois bought a small Catrina statue and I bought two mugs. Lupita did some shopping as well.

From there we went to the bigger market town of Quiroga. We enjoyed soaking up the local atmosphere, but we didn’t sample the carnitas sold on the street.

We drove on along the lake to Santa Fe de la Laguna, a perfect example of a tiny Mexican town unspoiled by the outside world. The local people are of P'urhépecha heritage. I snapped a photo of a sign advertising Coca Cola, written in their language. We stopped at a lakeside restaurant outside of the town for some delicious fish – whole “dorados” brought in weekly from Sinaloa.

And we visited Tzintzuntzan, with its impressive Convent of Santa Ana and market featuring artesan-made straw Christmas ornaments. The glass coffin for a representation of Jesus Christ had to be extended some time ago as the body grew longer – a miraculous occurrence, as the body was made of straw and cactus sap. Finally we toured the nearby archeological site with massive yucatas (pyramid-platforms, or “Sun Temples”) on a hill overlooking Lake Patzcuaro.

Coming back into Morelia, we stopped for a delightful visit with Tali, Agustín’s niece. Another superb day in Michoacan!
