After exploring the ruins and enjoying the views, we set out on our return journey, following a different route along the eastern side of the island. Our first destination was the town of Challapampa, on a narrow isthmus on the northeast coast. The sun had appeared and we had no more rain, but we were now on the green side of the island, with lots of farming and plenty of burros. We saw the totora reeds growing in the shallows in front of the village. We stopped for lunch at Inca Uta Hostal Restaurant in Challapampa. These days are part of carnival, so many houses and boats are very much decorated for Cha’lla. The trails we were following got pretty rough in this stretch. And we also climbed up and over various ridges only to go back down to beaches (at the village of Challa, for example).
